CA FAB Statement on Roe Anniversary and the Push for Expanded Abortion Access in 2023

The California Future of Abortion Council (CA FAB Council) steering committee, comprised of ACCESS REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE, Black Women for Wellness Action Project, Essential Access Health, NARAL Pro-Choice California, National Health Law Program, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, and Training in Early Abortion for Comprehensive Healthcare (TEACH) released the following statement on what would have been the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade:

“The California Future of Abortion Council is dedicated to making California a place where everyone can live, thrive, and raise families in healthy communities. The profoundly personal decision about whether, when, or how to become a parent is one of the most significant life decisions that people make and all people should be able to make that decision without unnecessary barriers or political interference.”

“Last year’s Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which overturned Roe after nearly 50 years of the fundamental right being in place, has led to dozens of states enacting total or extreme bans on abortion care - leaving millions of people without the ability to access legal abortion in their home state. In the face of this extremism, California continues to provide a blueprint for what is possible when policy centers people, equity, science, and medicine.”

“In 2023, the CA FAB Council will continue to champion policies that make accessing abortion easier and safer for people in California and those who come to our state seeking care. Together, we are envisioning and working towards a bolder and better future for all post-Roe.”

The 2023 update to the FAB Council’s historic report highlights new policy recommendations that state leaders and lawmakers can pursue to continue to increase access to safe, equitable, and affordable abortion care during the 2023-2024 legislative session.

The FAB Council also thanks Senate President pro Tem Toni Atkins and Senator Nancy Skinner for authoring SR 9 and Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry for authoring HR 6, the resolutions commemorating the Roe Anniversary. SR 9 advanced from the Senate Judiciary Committee on January 17, and both measures are expected to be heard on the Floor this week.
